Between the mid-sixties and the early nineties, our club made a name for itself through its participation in the community.   We had an interest group called “Community Involvement”, we acted as regular observers at meetings of the Board of Education, Board of Health, Social Planning Council, Planning Council, Mental Health Council, etc., and in addition we convened and sponsored public meetings.  In fact, the club’s participation in the community was recognized by the Etobicoke Council in September 1992, when that month was designated as Canadian Federation of University Women’s Month.

Public Meetings:

  • Family Property Law (1975): a film and panel discussion involving a lawyer, a judge, and the chair of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The moderator was one of our members.
  • Media Literacy (1982): a day-long conference on the effect of TV on children, attended by parents, teachers and media personalities.
  • Disarmament (Peace Initiatives) (1985): speaker was Douglas Roche, Canada’s ambassador for Disarmament
  • Talk -Back (1988): a meeting with speaker Dr. Hamilton Hall, “The Back Doctor,” at the time a medical celebrity author and back pain guru.

Participation:

  • Group Counseling Pilot Project (1966) on married women returning to the work force
  • One of a series of Federal Government sponsored “Community Talks” (1992) to gather local attitudes toward various government priorities

Sponsorship:

  • telethon with Maclean-Hunter (1993) in support of Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter
  • All-Candidates’ Meetings
  • interviewing medical and hospital staff as part of a survey conducted by the Etobicoke Health Planning Committee (1973)
